Soot Stamping Technique - Great for Spooky looking Images

I was rummaging through some of my old work when I came across some images I did using the Soot Stamping Technique and I thought this would be great for creating some spooky Halloween art.

ATC created using the Reverse Soot Stamping Technique.
The main image is by Stamp Camp Rubber Stamps.

Soot Stamping is a process where you use white glossy cardstock, soot collected from an open candle flame and a rubber stamp image. The soot is applied to the cardstock and then the image is stamped and lifted.  The stamp actually removes the soot from the cardstock leaving behind a "ghost image".

Reverse Soot Stamping is a process where you use white glossy cardstock, Versamark Ink, a rubber stamp image and soot collected from an open candle flame.  In this version the image is stamped with Versamark ink onto the glossy cardstock, next the soot is applied and then with a soft tissue you lightly brush the soot away.  This allows the soot to stick to the Versamark ink and leaves a slight smokey residue around the image.

Depending on the technique you use you get a different look. Traditional Soot Stamping generally produces "ghost" images that are great for creating that spooky look; however depending on the stamp image you use the reverese soot stamping technique may give you the look you are trying to achieve.

I while ago I did a Soot Stamping Tutorial for Third Coast Rubber stamps showing how to create traditional soot stamping and reverse soot stamping. - Click HERE to see the tutorial.
